The other day Hubs was on the couch watching TV. As I passed through the living room to put some laundry away, I stopped to catch a commercial for the newest Fitbit. We were both intrigued, but for different reasons. Hubs is an avid exerciser, he runs and lifts weights everyday so he started telling me how he needed this new device to keep him on track and keep track of his efforts to improve his physical fitness. Bless that man, he can’t keep a gadget together/working. He has gone through many mp3 players, iPods, wireless headphones, and a generic Fitbit and none of them have made it out alive! Of course I said something “funny” but sweet and he chuckled along realizing his dilemma.
My intrigue came from a memory; A few weeks before this, I was having coffee with a friend. She also makes sure she takes time for exercise and is familiar with this Fitbit thingy. But as she and I conversed about being fit in body and spiritual things, like prayer and bible study she suddenly said ” wouldn’t it be cool to have a Spiritual Fitbit, that would remind us and keep track of how well we are doing, or show us what areas need more assertion.?!” I totally agreed that would be cool and I would be more apt to use that one!
We can be each others Fitbit by noticing the fruits of the Spirit as they appear in each others lives. My friends and family should be able to tell if I’m Spiritually fit if I’m showing signs of fruit. In the old days, I behaved differently, quite the opposite of good fruit, more like a rotten apple and every one could see it!
Galatians 5:22-23 New International Version (NIV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Will you join me today….watch to see signs of fruit in others and then make sure you give a report, an encouraging word, a compliment, or your approval to that person who is showing those fruits of the spirit. And if you want to keep track of your own spiritual fitness just read these often and apply them.
Lord, you have made us fit in body, spirit and mind may we continue to strengthen, grow and mature in the knowledge of you and your word so as to produce these spiritual fruits. Help us to lovingly look for fruit and encourage our brothers and sisters to be fit in you. In Jesus name Amen.
What a perfect idea! Now I can think of a Fitbit-type thingy for lots of other reasons, too. 🙂
LOVE this idea and the article!!
Love this!
That’s a great word of encouragement to be the “spiritual Fitbit” for someone else!
