Let Us Be Sober

The morning light has yet to show it’s face. Darkness surrounds me, the heavy air smells musty and being outside when it’s dark is a little freaky, so I step back inside and open my bible. My mug this morning holds lemon honey tea…decaffeinated…so I won’t get into any trouble today, haha. As I read through 1 Thessalonians 4 and 5 Paul is explaining death, grieving, hope, the return of Christ and instructions for believers.

When writing this letter, Paul’s intent was to strengthen the Thessalonian Christian’s in their faith and give them the assurance of Christ’s return. The congregation was still young in their faith, they lacked maturity, but they were showing progress.

I’ve had times where I thought death missed me by a breath, those close calls on the interstate by the hand of someone’s careless driving or even the careless or daring actions of myself. When I lived in darkness and usually wasn’t sober. Even though I believed in Christ, I remained intoxicated more than I was sober. I felt God continually tug at my heart, urging me to grow in my faith, come closer to him…. Grow Up, Be Sober, and Mature.

As the morning sky puts on it’s colors of pink and purple. I reflect on 1 Thes 5:5-11. As I put on love, faith and salvation I must be ready for Christ’s return and encourage others to do the same. Let today be the day that you remain sober, not drowning your sorrows, or fueling your anger. You cannot change the dark past with it’s heartaches and failures, but you can change your future by living in the light.

Join me….as we mature, no longer a slave to darkness, our past, or to the people who have hurt us. Step with me into the future of forgiveness, wearing faith, love, salvation and encourage one another.

“Father, we give you our broken hearts, you are the ultimate healer. Lift us up and carry us when we are weak. May we live in your light and bring light to those around us, always growing in our faith drawing closer to you, and joining you when you return. In Jesus name amen.”
