An autumn chill is in the air. I make my way out to the patio, around the time the sun lays it’s sleepy head to rest. Conditions are almost perfect. As the first flame on my kindling rubs off on the loose bark, I dash back into the house and retrieve my cup of Irish coffee. The fire starts to really bring some heat, so does the annoying neighbor dog with it’s constant barking. Some folks may give up at this point, but this loyal outdoor security guard is just doing his job. It’s too bad the owner wasn’t home to quiet him down. Or maybe the owner wishes this crazy pyro would stay indoors more often! At any rate I stay outside, settle in one of my chairs with a foot stool and slip off my shoes. There’s just something about toasting my toes by a fire that thoroughly warms my soul. Laying my head back for a moment I can hear the calming crackle and hiss from the burning logs and try to focus on that instead of the insistent barking. Above me the stars are winking at me, and my conversation with God begins. Until, my pant leg feels alive and I smell something strange. Old ladies can jump! And I’m sure as I was putting out that very hot ember, all satellite stations were tuned in amazed at the dance moves this Old lady has. Now that’s hot!
Some may question, was I dancing in the spirit and others may wonder if I spoke in tongues. Strangely, enough I sat back down in the same frame of mind as before the rogue ember landed. Neither pesky hound, nor burning coals were going to keep me and the Lord from spending time together. After all life is short, and the day goes by so quickly that it can be gone without even a nod given to the one who created us. I want more than that regarding my relationship with God. And the devil continued throughout the night to distract me..but I stayed determined.
We do not know how many days we have here and it’s important to make the most of them. Keeping the fire burning in our relationship with our Savior leads to peace, contentment and eventually life. We can’t let all those pesky distractions keep us from the flame.
Join me….as we meditate on Gods word and linger in his presence, daily …….
“Lord, we realize our time here is short and we long to draw closer to you…spending eternity with you. Let us trust in you, and seek to keep our relationship with you constantly burning. Let us not be swayed by the devils schemes. In Jesus name amen.”
