A couple of night’s ago, during a couch conversation, I heard a confusing marital comment from Hubs. I’d been thinking for several months that our marriage was due for a tune-up, as my emotions were starting to break-down and now this comment affirmed my thinking. Periodically, we seek a professional’s help for a marriage check-up. Especially when we aren’t communicating properly. And how could we do it properly on our own….he’s a man and I’m an emotional woman!
Last night we attended a dinner concert. The trio performing were amazing musician’s, each of them without a doubt had mastered the art of playing music and the instrument’s they played. As a child and teen I attempted to play five different instruments, I even took professional lessons on them all. I would end up in an emotional break down not long after starting, when I realized guitar gave my fingers calluses, the accordion was way too heavy, and the coronet required more air than I had (I know you find that hard to believe, I didn’t have enough air). Through all of these lessons the one thing we all realized was…I could sing, naturally well. I then started voice lessons in order to master the art of singing. Unlike the grueling instrument practicing, I enjoyed the time spent perfecting the voice because for me it was easier. I think it was because I already had some talent in this area that made practice somewhat easy. What I lacked more was self-confidence and because this was an emotion type thing, I didn’t even try to master it….so I did not become a professional singer.
We can be involved in many things, we can have natural talent or be gifted in someway, but if we never work at mastering or perfecting it then we are only good enough at it… too just get by. While there is something to say about knowing a little bit about a lot of things, it’s really more meaningful to know that we are exceptional at one thing. When two people marry it is good, but when they both work or practice at mastering a good marriage then it is truly good!
Think about a time when you poured your whole self into learning or mastering something…..an art project, cooking a special dish, passing a very difficult test, or training for a race. Or how bout mastering that anger, bitterness, fear, or arrogance? Sometimes we need guidance from a professional, a cook book, or online DIY video…time spent with someone who has already mastered their feat. If you are a { jack of all trades, but a master of none} then today is the day to start putting forth the effort! Easy or hard….you can do it!
Join me…as I take time to make mastering my emotions, proper communication in my marriage and…. my sins a priority.
“God, we realize that we must work, whether it’s hard or easy we must keep practicing in order to master our task set before us. Please give us your strength, your power and your wisdom as we apply it. Also Lord, please forgive us for not allowing you to be the Master over EVERY area of our lives. In Jesus name Amen.”
