The early sky had a very subtle waking this morning. Across the horizon comes pinks and purples faintly seen. We are a little unusually chilly here in the South for November. Before I can return indoors the chameleon sky bursts forward with vivid burning color.
When I rose this morning to make Hubs his breakfast, I looked in the direction of the coffee maker hearing it sing it’s siren song. Cutting back on coffee filled with flavored cream during colder weather, doesn’t seem logical, yet it is necessary. Caffeine messes with my heart rhythm, and I cannot drink black coffee so, filling it half full of sugary artery clogging flavored cream is the only way I roll. It’s my desire.
Temptation comes subtly, luring us with it’s song. Sin bursts forward overtaking us quickly. However it is the initial desire that leads us in the direction of the temptation.
Jesus was tempted. He had a legit desire, to eat and drink. Being on a fast for 40 days will cause some serious belly growling. Larger, than those hunger pangs was the powerful song of the Holy Spirit that filled his mind, heart and gut. He did not give in to his desire. He also had just spent 40 days drawing closer to this power which allowed him to turn a deaf ear to the siren song.
If we are honest with ourselves, we will see that our own desire’s are not all that legit.
On a cold morning, warming up with a cup of hot herbal tea and a splash of honey versus the heavy cream laden jolt of joe is a powerful alternative. The desire for tasty warmth is still satisfied. Study and prayer time aka sit’n’sip will then draw us and the Holy Spirit closer, filling us with HIS power. The power we need to change our desire, fight our temptations and celebrate victory.
I’d better stock up on tea!
