The umbrella is up, the heat is on and here I am on the patio. As I sit with eyes closed my ears pick up the sweet chipper tunes coming from our backyard tweets. Their melody is music to my ears. I myself am a songbird. In years past my vocal chords were strong and the sound was sweet. Today I am untrained and out of practice, yet in quiet when I am alone I lift my voice to praise my King. I hope he finds pleasure in my voice. And on occasion I am known to pick up a microphone and sing Karaoke with our family and friends. There are some people who do not like to hear birds chirping they feel it is annoying. I know one in particular, my Hubs.
A few months ago the Hubs and I had the pleasure of spending a relaxing weekend at a local Inn. A loving thoughtful gift given to us by our Home Group. They wanted us to get away before Hubs left on his 7 month deployment overseas. I booked us for a couples massage upon arriving. We have each had massages before alone but never together and I was super excited. Two things about me that some of you may not know; I am chatty and it takes me awhile to unwind and clear my mind. As our massage started, the music started. To my horror it was a marching band type thing going on which was not going to help me in anyway relax. I started chatting, and got the two girls chatting and laughing. I asked for a different selection of tunes, something nature like, maybe birds, water you know relaxing. Then Hubs rejects the request for birds. Well we were both out because they had brought only one CD. A few mins pass and I hear his girl ask him how he was feeling, he said “good, if my wife could be quiet I’d be better”. What?! really he did not just say that! We all laughed, but I got the message and I wasn’t offended, so I stopped chatting and tried to relax. A few mins more and he was snoring!
I’ve been reading Genesis in my bible and this morning In Chpt 6 verse 20 God told Noah to bring on the Ark his family, and two of every kind of bird, and animal and keep them alive. Oh my! the family all gabbing, and birdies cheeping, tweeting, and animals snorting, and growling had to be quite the noise event of the year! This thought has me wondering if Noah thought these were sweet tunes, or did he long for someone to invent ear plugs! I know according to this chapter that Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord, he was righteous and blameless compared to all the other people. I’m pretty confident that he found it challenging to have a quiet time with God on the Ark, but because he loved God he found the time and a place to be with him. Maybe he too like my Hubs asked everyone to be quiet.
Psalm 46 is a song and verse 10 says “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted in the earth.”
I encourage you today, to face the challenge in our busy, noisey lives and take the time, pick a nice quiet comfortable spot and enjoy God.
